Exerpt from Blogpost Definition: Like The Fool, The Judgment card encourages us to release emotional baggage, and as signified by the presence of all four minor arcana suits, this baggage can be emotional, mental, spiritual, or material. This card, however, gives us the tools we need to do so. Its gift is discernment, or the ability to grasp and comprehend the less obvious. Discernment enables us to make sound decisions by utilizing intuition to see into the truth of matters. It is the difference between reacting and responding, which further enables us to make decisions that support a positive spiritual mindset. Perhaps this discernment is the secret to Dolly’s success.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.donnalouisefaber.com/whats-new/2010/8/20/liza-with-a-z.html"><rss:title>LIZA with a Z!</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.donnalouisefaber.com/whats-new/2010/8/20/liza-with-a-z.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

Introducing

I wanted to fill a journal with as much magic as I could. So, I indulged myself in free flow collage creativity, which has no boundaries other than what we impose, and which I’ve enjoyed doing for years. In this case, it was a welcome change from doing large portraits. Portraits are a commitment, and I needed a break. The challenge was staying within the journal’s size. It was fun!

Soon thereafter, I got into stickers and the art journal took on new definition. Stickers are inspiring in their own way, and an artist can build a whole piece around one sticker that speaks out to them. I graduated quickly to cards and bookmarks, the next logical step, and made a limited Spring series that can viewed here. After cardmaking (which is very much like scrapbooking), individual pieces of art seemed the best way to express myself creatively through collage!

View the new Collage Art & Sticker Madness gallery to see individual thematic works of art that are made from stickers and are suitable for framing. The matte is part of the piece (which I think looks really cool), and each is signed and titled by the artist.

What is the Creating is Breathing Tarot?

Creating is Breathing Tarot uses pop-culture imagery from any and all sources regardless of origin or copyright. I have no plans to sell this deck, and will probably end up giving the original individual cards away. Each completed card has been copy written under an Attribution Creative Commons license on Flickr, however, which I hope is the right thing to do (I’m open to input).

When all is said and done, I’ll have three separate tarot galleries here at donnalouisefaber.com. One will be exclusively for Major Arcana cards, one for Minor Arcana Royalty, and the last will be for Minor Arcana Suit cards. As I do with the rest of my art, I will blog significant meanings and symbolism for each tarot card and link everything together so it’s relatively easy to find.

This began as an art journal that I posted on Flickr and Facebook. I started journaling in response to a period of artistic attention deficit that I’m probably still going through, and a bunch of inspiration I got from bloggers I know who art journal regularly. It seemed like a good way to relieve my need to create without entering into too much of a commitment, so I began making little collages. Those pieces gradually transformed into tarot cards, although I’m not sure why or how. They just … well, they just sort of happened.

Sharing the Process

Each card is a 3”x5” collage. The small size is a challenge I enjoy working with. To satisfy my creative urge and bring each small vision into reality, I need the freedom to pull whatever images I desire, without any restriction.

First, I get closer to the symbolism and meaning of the card using a number of my favorite book and internet resources. Then, I focus on graphics, look for images, and loosely plan composition. I think the longest and toughest part is actually cutting all the little bits and pieces out using scissors and without mangling them. But that’s also part of the meditation or spiritual infusion of each card. It’s important I let spirit move through me (something an artist friend of mine in NYC would say) to allow the card to be whatever it needs to be. If I interfere intellectually with that process for some silly reason, it stalls or gets frustrating. When I assemble the collage, at last it transforms based on the needs of that assembly. I do highlights with a metallic pen, if it needs it. Not all cards do.

At the time of this writing, I’ve got a large, unfinished and beautiful piece on Francine sitting in my dining room. She stares out at me with lovely green eyes and enticingly red lips. This poor incomplete muse is a reluctant refugee of my artistic attention deficit syndrome. I hope she returns soon, demanding attention, making a ruckus and breaking rules in love.

Until then, I hope these tiny morsels of intuited tarot wisdom satisfy your artistic cravings as they do mine.

Volume 1, Issue #2

It’s been a long, wet winter here in Northern California. It's been raining for weeks, the dogs have tracked copious amounts of mud and yuck in from the outside, and my family and I have shared more than one bout of the latest flu. You know, a good virus is the gift that keeps on giving! Well, I'd like to return this particular gift back to sender!

What's the Latest?

I’ve entered into what I refer to as an ADD or attention deficit phase of my artistic expression. I don’t have the attention span or the focus I did around Christmas time. No, rather, I have the attention span of a gnat. Even Francine is quiet. Mid-January is the last time I finished a large piece, and subsequent larger projects have stalled in favor of smaller projects that provide immediate gratification for this restless, creative mind. When I get in this mood, and yes, it’s happened before, I typically end up making cards. There’s something about card making that meets the need, if you know what I mean. Unfortunately, all of my card making things are stashed in the garage, and without the energy to drag them out (the flu, remember?), what was I to do?

What to do. What to do.

Then, it hit me.

An Art Journal

I have a small, beautiful embellished leather journal that’s full of hand-made paper. Each page cries for a small bit of art, something that is the size of a card. And to make them, I can use anything I want – paper, stickers, stamps, paint, metallic pens – absolutely anything! It’s been a challenge keeping to the 3” x 5” size, but it’s been kind of fun, too, experiencing with texture, and constructing each piece. It’s like mini-scrapbooking. I’ve published quite a few pages on Facebook, a few on Twitter, and kept a few back because they are private. When the journal is full, it will be chock full of creative energy and magic!

In the meantime ...

Until I get my latest original piece finished and can post something new here, I’ve pulled a few older pieces out of the vault. These date back to 1990, which is 20 years ago already, and they’re two of my favorites. The first is my “Lingerie Vampire”, which is a study in big hair and sharp teeth. You can read more about her here. I also brought “Oh Lydia!” to the forefront, as well. While Lydia is quite naughty, she is another big favorite for obvious reasons. I mean, just look at her. What attitude! Read more about Lydia here.

So … I will leave you with this until the young maiden of Spring graces us with warmer, drier days. When She does, I’ll gladly crawl out of this wet, miserable funk and find myself some true inspiration!
